My Week in North Cyprus  by Dinah Stocken, October 2021 

In October 2018, Claudia spent a week in Cyprus visiting possible hotels and immediately fell in love with Gillham Vineyard Hotel situated in the beautiful north of the island. Plans were put on hold when the pandemic struck and after two postponements, was it going to be third time lucky?

Three years later, having navigated the essential, if challenging, covid paperwork, we were on our way arriving late in the evening to a heart-warming welcome from the Gillham staff and a delicious dinner on the terrace. It was not until the next day that we saw what a magical place we had come to. Set among rolling vineyards in the hills of Northern Cyprus, with views to the Mediterranean and southern Turkey beyond, the pictures we had seen did not begin to do it justice. The hotel part of the estate is beautifully laid out; all the suites luxuriously furnished with views overlooking the vineyards towards the sea or the mountains to the west.

The sensational food, local Cypriot with an Israeli twist, was one of the highlights; making a choice from the lengthy menu was the difficult bit and of course, the home-grown wines were a wonderful accompaniment.

So many things to do without having to go too far afield in perfect warm and sunny conditions: exploring the walking trails around the estate, relaxing by the pool, or having a hammam and massage, which I can honestly say was one of the best I have ever had! Those who went on the trip to St Hilarion Castle, Bellapais and Kyrenia had a great day out and found the guide to be extremely knowledgeable and interesting. 

But what has really stayed with me is the friendliness and obvious happiness of all the staff in every area of the hotel’s operations. Nothing was a problem or too much trouble. I can’t wait to return in the Spring!
